You know, I can't recall enjoying/loving/lusting after a character this much in a *long* time. (Like, say, my lasting obsession with Prince Dirk Blackpool from Wizards and Warriors.) Honestly.

My proverbial tri-cornered hat is off to the brilliant Johnny Depp for crafting the character of Captain Jack Sparrow in the way that he did. And for having the courage to stick with his initial vision in the first film, no matter the mutterings. This pirate who sways by land is single-minded, comically charming and seems more than slightly mental - savvy? But Jack's a crafty one and I loved to watch him wind his way through the first film, while wishing heartily for much more screen time. (Little did I know there were three more films to come, but the first is my favorite.) This page deals with only the first two installations.

When you think of what the studio probably wanted and thankfully didn't get (which is noted in some of the interview links for POTC: Curse of the Black Pearl below) this characterization shines the brighter as an artistic statement. Hey, I love Disney flicks, but you have to admit that many of them contain stock formulas and predictable characters. Thanks to Depp, we get wowed by a pirate that we've never gotten to see before. Huzzah!

Below, I've compiled a number of links directly related to the character of Captain Jack Sparrow. We've got Mr. Depp talking about dear old Jack, cast interviews where Johnny/Jack are mentioned, a few reviews, costume sites, Jack Sparrow related sites and the official site, of course. All the links open in new windows.

And now, if you'll be very kind - go, sail the links and enjoy the voyage (and go easy on the goods, darling)!

Captain Jack Sparrow Character Analysis
Pretty darn interesting. Can't say I agree with it 100%, but I enjoyed it.

POTC Sue Of The Day
I love this idea! I'm not a "Sue" fan (the authors usually want to redeem Jack somehow and he's just lovely the way he is) and find this site very funny!

Ministry Of Rum
Can't have a Jack Sparrow page and not mention rum, can we? I'd tip a bottle with Jack fer certain sure.

Johnny In General
I've always liked Johnny in most of his roles, though many of the films are not in my usual viewing genres. Whether or not I liked the film/story/execution of the ideas, I'm always impressed with the reality and underlying humor of his characters. I'm also impressed with his ironic, self-depreciating sense of humor and that he doesn't go on a "star trip" about what he does. I can dig that.
